International Day of Happiness: the small moments that support learning

Encouraging healthy habits to support learning

Written by Kate Storey

Hello Educators!

When parents talk about what they want most for their children at school, the answer is often simple: they want them to feel happy, settled, and ready to learn.

In classrooms, we know that happiness does not mean constant positivity or enjoyment. More often, it means students feeling secure enough to participate, ask questions, and engage with learning without feeling overwhelmed. When students feel settled, learning becomes far more accessible.

As the term progresses and assessments begin to approach across year groups, pressure naturally increases. Year 11 students prepare for GCSEs, Year 10 students complete mocks, and younger students begin end-of-year assessments. At times like this, small opportunities to pause and focus on wellbeing can make a meaningful difference.

Tutor time can provide a simple space to reinforce habits that help students feel balanced and ready to learn. Conversations might focus on:

  • maintaining consistent sleep and routines

  • spending time moving or getting outdoors

  • eating regularly to support energy and concentration

  • taking short moments to pause and reset during busy weeks

These reminders help students recognise that looking after themselves supports learning; it is not separate from it.

GCSEPodโ€™s Keeping Fit and Healthy Pods offer accessible starting points for these conversations. Designed for tutor time or assemblies, they explore practical ways students can support their wellbeing and maintain balance during demanding parts of the school year.

You may wish to explore the Keeping Fit and Healthy Pods within the GCSEPod library and use them as short discussion starters or reflective moments during this week.
