Outdoor Learning and Student Engagement

Using outdoor spaces to re‑energise focus and thinking

Written by Kate Storey

Hello Educators!

With the weather beginning to improve, many schools find students a little more eager to be outdoors. It can be a good moment to make small use of outdoor spaces as part of everyday learning.

This does not need to be a large activity or a planned event. A discussion outside, a starter task in an open space, or a short change of environment can help reset attention and encourage different kinds of thinking.

Across subjects, using outdoor spaces can support learning by:

  • encouraging observation and discussion

  • helping students approach familiar ideas from a new angle

  • creating natural opportunities for collaboration

  • re-engaging focus during busy weeks

These moments are often simple but memorable for students, particularly at this point in the year when routines can start to feel familiar.

GCSEPod can fit naturally into this approach too. You might take devices outside and use a Pod as a lesson starter, watch an explanation together in a different setting, or ask students to revisit a pod before discussing ideas outdoors. Small changes like this can help familiar learning feel fresh again.

You may wish to explore Pods linked to current topics and consider how they might support learning beyond the classroom this week.
